Model United NationsMiddle School Model United Nations
A Model UN offers students an oppotunityto gain substantive knowledge about the cultures, policies and countries they represent. They can learn the details of important global issues and the mechanisms for peaceful resolution of disputes, at the same time sharpening their interpersonal skills. As diplomats working in an international forum, Model UN participants are motivated to thoroughly research their countries and the issues under discussion. They must practice writing and speaking skills in order to persuade delegates from other attending schools. Perhaps of greatest importance, the Model UN process encourages students to learn the skills of compromise, negotiation, and consensus buildings. Membership in Model UN gives middle-school students the opportunity to learn about the inner workings of the United Nations, our government and the governments of countries around the world. Participants will choose a country for their club to represent, learn about their chosen nation, and then represent their country at a mock session of the United Nations along with other students from across the state. Students develop debating skills, cultural awareness and social skills through their participation in this program.
